Why Morpheus?

His goal was to find the ‘One’ and prepare, equip and help in every way he could. He believed in the one even the one doubted himself.  Morpheus is my favourite character because he didn’t need to be the one but was content to serve, to take a lower more humble place. I see myself as being a bit like Morpheus as I desire to point, poke, and help students probe their own spirituality.

Land Mines and Hand grenades

The games we play picture what it is like going through spirituality classes. First it is not safe. When you run through the middle you have hand grenades being thrown at you and in addition land mines to dodge. The more you survive the fewer there are and the harder it is to dodge the balls flying at your head (officially below the waist). Sharing your personal thoughts and beliefs is risky because it means we become vulnerable. We encourage students to accept this risk, to share anyway and to show each other respect.

Ebz freedom and grace

Spirituality classes are often confusing. We play a game where you get a ball thrown at your head and you have to do the opposite of what you are told. Catch and you need to head it. Head and you need to catch it. Now Guy has done Pscychology and he loves messing with our minds with this game. It is a real laugh. It helps us realise that sometimes people use words differently and we need to be prepared to hear them out.

Believe

We all believe something. And that something controls much of who we are and much of what we do. Belief is our understanding of something, something that we might think is important or true. Sometimes believing can represent trusting in something. For example I believe that the bench we sat on will hold me up, I evidence that belief by sitting on the bench.

Origin

Where do our beliefs come from? Parents, upbringing, experience are the most obvious sources of our belief. We also explored other areas like music, movies, books, the media and the Bible.

Understanding

We don’t always understand what we believe. For example I don’t understand how a black and white cow eats green grass to make white milk. One student referred to ‘love’ as an example. It may not be easy to explain but we believe in it.

Afterwards

What happens after we die? Not sure, come back as another person or animal, go to heaven, nothing were the different suggestions. Ants might be people returning who were arrogant. They come back small and having to work in a community rather than an individual.

Hi

Life game

We played a game that simulates life. You get hit by circumstances that make you stuck and only your friends can free you. The more you get hit the more friends it takes to release you. Here are a few reflections from the game.

To begin with most students tried to evade those with the pool noodles (bad circumstances). But after a few rounds they started freeing each other more. It would be great if students could be helped out of their boredom.

Getting stuck

Lots of things can make us stuck. Getting grounded and getting bored are common among students. In fact boredom seems like an epidemic, particularly in school holidays. So I’m guessing school is boring and then holidays are boring. That is what I call stuck.

Question

A student wanted to know how I felt about following a religious rules that may not end up be true. My reply was that I would feel ripped off. There are times when I go against my feelings. My kids drive me crazy but I still love them. I don’t get drunk, I try not to let anger speak for me.

Positive and Negative
happy sad faces
Circumstances can change happy to bored to sad
bored baby
Bored from an early age

Speaking personally in response to the students comment. I like Christianity because it isn’t just rules that stop you. Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal. But when Jesus summarised the law he said Love God and love people. So the negative don’t murder means don’t deliberately hurt people and actively encourage people, help people. It is as much about doing as not doing.

I believe that our lives would be a lot happier if we were more proactive in helping each other rather than thinking of ourselves as much as we do. We may not get as bored.
