Life Style Auction We fear complicated relationships  We fear unhappy marriage  We fear being lonely Today we did a life style auction where we bid against each others small groups for things like: A superior mind, power over people, an artistic genius, a millionaire, a good marriage, a good family, lots of friends, good health, a sports car. ValuesThis exercise encouraged us to think about what is important to us, what we think is valuable. Our small group bought: Artistic genius which we thought included musical ability. A superior mind and a good marriage. MarriageSome of the girls did not feel confident about whether they would have a good marriage in the future because of their parents mistakes and broken marriage or they just didn’t feel confident with boys being faithful, committed. Money can’t buy happinessOne student shared from experience that money can’t buy happiness so we did not bid hard for being a millionaire. It makes me think that lots of things don’t automatically make us happy. We can have friends or a more special relationship but that can bring more pain than comfort. Hanging outSome of our time was talking about what music we liked, why one student’s team lost their soccer game. Why relationships with the opposite sex can be so complicated and painful, why being a guy in some ways is more simple that being a girl; they can be so bitchy (that what they said not me). And when guys fight it over with. I’m happy being a bloke. Couldn’t girls not be so bitchy if they all hate it? I suppose only a guy could ask that question. |

Hi  Doctor of a different time and field  Plumbing Dan, Linford, Adam and Michael How important are Values?What we believe, what we value shapes our decision, how we act, what we do and who we become. All of that is very abstract but important to get our heads around. Why School?I asked the students why they come to school. Essentially they come to learn, they come because it is a legal requirement to go to school. Primarily the reason to learn is to get a job Why a Job?We get a job because we want to earn money so that we can live, so that we can buy things. |

Hi Gumby our Super Stretchy Hero  Block Heads are Gumby's nemesis Dan, Linford, Bryony, Maria, Kate, Joey, James and Adam. ConfessionI’d like to kick this blog off with a confession. Guy our Chaplain makes it really clear that Spirituality Class is not about Bible Bashing, teaching Religion. It is a discussion of the students own spiritual journey. To do that we need to learn to respect each other by listening and not bagging another person’s opinion. Sure we can disagree but we don’t make fun of each other. A student shared that his hero during primary school was Gumby. I and other students burst our laughing, not even knowing who this super hero was. Luckily the student was wearing a Tshirt of his super hero. I feel really bad about that but the student took it in good humour. So I am going to call this class Gumby in honour of this unknown super hero and the student for enlightening us. GumbyOk just because I’ve never heard of this super-hero doesn’t mean I should under estimate his powers. He is a stretchy super hero that has made into other films and our language. |
