5 Rules for the world

Students were encouraged to write down five rules or principles that the entire world would follow. Here is a selection of their suggestions:

  • Creamie Soda should be supplied free every morning.

  • Governments should think before they act

  • No Religions

  • No one can be stereotyped; no racism, no sexism or any other ‘isms’

  • No fighting and killing

  • Equality between men, women, and different races

  • Respect of different religions

  • Don’t steal things

  • Talk through things, don’t jump to conclusions and think before you act; for example try and talk through problems before war/fighting

  • Give everyone a chance to explain themselves

  • Love life

  • Love God

  • Love your neighbour

Exposing a hidden value

Everyone agrees with the basic values of respect, honesty, not stealing. However, everyone admitted that they have lied and have stolen, not just to protect someone’s feelings but to gain an advantage or to protect themselves. This means that we agree with values as long as it does not cost us too much personally. Religions and beliefs are sometimes used to make ourselves feel good, or superior to other people. This is why one student wanted to ban all religions because many conflicts have come from religions.

What is our core value?

Most people choose their values and beliefs to suits themselves. Sometimes they are even prepared to break their values and go against their beliefs. We lie, steal, disrespect, and hurt people because we are selfish. We value ourselves more than we do other people. So sometimes we are prepared to hurt others, or allow other people to be hurt to protect or advance ourselves.

The solution to the world’s problems

There is not shortage of rules and principles to live by that will improve the world. It’s not a question of ignorance. The problem with the world is me (the Rev). Because I struggle with selfishness I hurt people and I allow people to be hurt. I am not the husband, father, son, friend and minister I should be. The only way the world will be changed is by changing one heart at a time, starting with mine. The change must be fundamental because it must change me from being selfish to loving (selfless). This is not a change that I can do for myself. I believe only God can change my heart. Jesus Christ is a perfect example of a selfless (loving) life, lived for God and the people of the world.
