| Facing Addiction Part III |

![]() Monster Addiction Maslow’s pyramid of needs: According to Abraham Maslow, our human needs can be understood like a pyramid or hierarchy. At the base of the pyramid are our physical needs such as our need for air, water, food, safety. When these basic needs are met we begin to work on our emotional needs, such as acceptance, friendship and love. At the top of the pyramid is our need for self-actualisation, which Maslow describes as our need to adopt moral standards by which to live and our need to express ourselves creatively. Life according to Maslow is all about meeting our basic and complex needs. This all makes sense except that it denies our spiritual need, which when properly understood turns Maslow’s pyramid upside down. The greater need: Without God you are left alone with your needs and it’s up to you to try and fulfil them. But God changes everything. He actually tells his children not to worry about what they will eat and what they will wear because life is more than food and clothing (Luke 12:22-34). God says “I’ll worry about what you need; you worry about being and doing what I made you for.” With God in your life your primary need is to please him. In summary, God is pleased when we love him and when we love people (Matthew 22:37-39). God turns your needs upside down so that your greatest need is not to be loved but to love. The way to overcome an addiction is not to need it anymore. The way not to need it anymore is to have a greater need. Your greater need is to love God and love people. This will free you to enjoy giving rather than receiving and serving rather than being served. Please watch or listen to the messages at www.godsgap.net/triumph. |
